She's about to suggest open-heart surgery on her child to "get to the bottom of this." She checks her teeth for lipstick and, as the doctor enters, shoots the girl a warning glance. Her mother, on the other hand, seems curiously excited. It’s four o’clock, and she hasn’t been allowed to eat anything all day. Just twelve, she’s tall, skinny, and weak. A remarkable memoir that speaks in an original and distinctive Midwestern voice, rising to indelible scenes in prose of scathing beauty and fierce humor.Ī young girl is perched on the cold chrome of yet another doctor’s examining table, missing yet another day of school. Darwin published his theory with compelling evidence for evolution in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species.īy the 1870s the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection. Charles Robert Darwin, FRS (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist. The Voyage of the Beagle is Darwin's fascinating account of his trip - of his biological and geological observations and collection activities, of his speculations about the causes and theories behind scientific phenomena, of his interactions with various native peoples, of his beautiful descriptions of the lands he visited, and of his amazing discoveries in the Galapagos archipelago.Īlthough scientific in nature, the literary quality rivals those of John Muir and Henry Thoreau. It was this world-wide journey, however, that launched the scientists career. ”I hate every wave of the ocean”, the seasick Charles Darwin wrote to his family during his five-year voyage on the H.M.S. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Doctor Who by Paul CornellNow, I've actually read in in print for the first time, albeit via the 2015 reprint from BBC Books, not its original 1995 Virgin publication. About ten years after that, I listened to the audiobook of the novel, read by Lisa Bowerman (who plays companion Bernice Summerfield on audio) when I reviewed it for Unreality SF. Then, in 2007, I actually got to watch the story, when an adaptation starring David Tennant was broadcast to the nation. In those pre-Kindle days, I would have read the whole thing on my dorm room computer screen. The first time was way back in 2004, during the Wilderness Years, when Human Nature was one of the out-of-print novels that BBCi selected for its ebook program. This is my fourth time experiencing Human Nature, each time in a different medium. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Alaska book michener"Always the master of exhaustive historical research, Michener tracks the settling of Alaska vividly detailed scenes and well-developed characters." - Boston Herald The characters that Michener creates are bigger than life." - Los Angeles Times Book Review Alaska takes the reader on a journey through one of the bleakest, richest, most foreboding, and highly inviting territories in our Republic, if not the world. And they're all constrained in these tiny little worlds. And between Twitter, which is particularly bad in this way, and the way the internet functions and the way social media functions, all content, all information is in these little packages that are small and are designed to grab your attention and then have you share them or move them along. There is, at this moment, because of the way technology works, the way that my industry and cable news works, there is this insane competition war for people's attention. Here's the thing about the world that we live in and the information we consume. Tiffany Champion, just a little rant, maybe rant, about the state of the discourse. Melleby ( Hurricane Season) paints Brie as a recognizable teen: authentic in her self-centeredness and sympathetic in her attempts to embrace her identity. Brie also worries about her disassociation from her faith, which is linked in her mind to her awakening sexuality and the growing distance she feels between herself and her mother. Mediocre student Brie redoubles her scholarly efforts, hoping to crown Mary and prove that she’s responsible enough to try out for a performing arts high school. In reality, that honor is usually reserved for top students such as Kennedy Bishop, a classmate on whom Brie develops a crush. But when her mom walks in just after she stumbles upon Playboy photos of her favorite female actor online, Brie blurts a lie to distract her: Brie will crown Mary during her Catholic school’s annual celebratory mass. One of the few things 13-year-old Brie and her mother have in common is their love of soap operas, and the eighth grader can’t wait to use her extensive knowledge of their dramatics when she auditions for her New Jersey school’s play. |
